In yet another case of “thankful for box office news that isn’t just speculation about what might happen to Tenet and Wonder Woman 1984,” I am pleased to report that last weekend had a minor-league hit among the various theaters currently open for business, be they drive-ins or otherwise. In a slight twist, Becky was the top new movie last weekend, as the “13-year-old girl (Lulu Wilson) defends her family (including Joel McHale) from Neo Nazi crooks (led by Kevin James)” action thriller earned $205,797 in 45 theaters. Give or take how Trolls: World Tour performed when it opened on VOD and in limited theatrical release on April 10, that’s the biggest opening weekend since mid-March. As noted on Sunday, Becky is exactly the kind of movie that once would have thrived as a drive-in title and/or a grungy movie theater B-movie offering. Directed by Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion and penned by Nick Morris, Lane Skye and Ruckus Skye, Becky mostly gets the job done on its own small-scale terms. While it has earned comparisons to Home Alone for its 13-year-old heroine and a couple of scenes where she makes traps for the baddies, it’s closer in structure and intent to Die Hard. It’s an R-rated movie where innocent people die badly and our young hero delivers lethal punishment to those threatening her father (McHale), potential step-mother (Amanda Brugel) and potential step-brother (Isaiah Rockcliffe).https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2020/06/09/weekend-box-office-becky-kevin-james-wretched-tenet-unhinged/#21d08dde5e9f
